Virtual Development and Training Centre VDTC: A Landmark in the "Land of Ideas"
The Fraunhofer IFF VDTC in Magdeburg has been selected as one of 365 landmarks in the “Land of Ideas”. This national campaign is intended to market Germany throughout the world in the year of the World Cup. The research institute will open its new expansion in the Port of Science on November 22, 2006 and present itself to the broad general public.

"Germany - Land of Ideas" is a national initiative sponsored by the German government and commerce and industry, represented by the German Industry Association (BDI) and leading corporations. The initiative’s objective is to present an image of Germany at home and abroad as a country that is innovative, open to the world and inspired. The Virtual Development and Training Centre VDTC was selected from more than 1,200 candidates and is now one of the unique series of landmarks, which will outstandingly represent Germany as a "Land of Ideas".

German President Horst Köhler is the patron of this initiative being coordinated by FC Deutschland GmbH and its CEO Mike de Vries. "Land of Ideas" is being supported by numerous German companies and cooperation partners from the research and academic communities, cultural organizations and social institutions. Federal Minister Schäuble underscored the importance of the initiative for Germany. "In 2006, the year of the World Cup, the world will be looking at Germany very attentively. With its projects, the initiative impressively documents that we live in an innovative country," said the Minister of the Interior.

"Richness of ideas, sustainability and commitment: These are the qualities the 365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas embody. Hence, it is a great honor for us to be allowed to represent Germany in the world as part of this initiative," was how the Director of the Fraunhofer-Institute for Factory Operation and Automation IFF Prof. Michael Schenk expressed his delight. “When we open our Virtual Development and Training Centre VDTC in Magdeburg’s Port of Science on November 22, 2006, we will be showing the interested general public how development, testing and training for tomorrow’s technologies function in virtual environments.”

The opening of the VDTC is an important event, especially for the capital of Saxony-Anhalt. Magdeburg will be celebrating a "Year of Science" next year and this major event in the Port of Science will be a significant highlight.
One landmark in Germany will present itself to the general public every day from January 1 through December 31, 2006. A "Land of Ideas" travel guide has been published in collaboration with DuMont publishers. It presents the landmarks and invites readers on a journey of discovery through the Land of Ideas.
